Artist Tom Jewell to act as juror and workshop presenter

PictureOil Landscape by artist Tom Jewell
Artist Tom Jewell spent some of his childhood years in Arizona, but has lived most of his life in southern Wisconsin.  The outdoors is where he and his family have developed a fondness for nature that has become the catalyst for his paintings.  Following high school he attended Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The instructors who tutored him at Layton gave him the formal and classical art education necessary to pursue a professional career in graphic design and print media.  As a graphic designer and Art Director Tom has received several industry awards for his creative designs.   Although Tom enjoyed a successful design and print management career, he always remained true to the influences of the instructors at Layton that enabled him to develop the basis for the direction of his painting style and technique.

Over the years Tom has exhibited paintings in numerous art galleries, art shows, art fairs and museums.  He has held one man shows and has exhibited in several multi-artist shows.  His work has received several awards in juried competitions.  His paintings are included in numerous corporate and private collections located in Wisconsin as well as several other states.  Tom has also received several private commission assignments throughout his career.

As a member of Oil Painters of America Tom is dedicated to the preservation of representational art. His paintings are focused on landscapes, water scenes, flowers and various horse related themes including western events and formal dressage. Tom also creates human and animal portrait paintings on a commission basis. The format of his work covers a broad spectrum that ranges from 8 X 10 inch paintings to 8 X 12 foot wall murals.

Tom is also a member of the Visionary Artists Group which meets on a regular basis to discuss current art issues and techniques as well as exchanging creative ideas through a positive critique of each others recent drawings and paintings. The group also plans and conducts art shows together to showcase their new works.

Ongoing Commitment to Wisconsin Lay Artists

The Wisconsin Regional Art Program was established to encourage Wisconsin citizens with a serious interest in art - people who make art purely for the love of it, rather than for fame and fortune. The purpose of WRAP is to encourage nonprofessional artists to develop their abilities.

The Wisconsin Regional Art Program consists of many artist workshop/exhibits that meet throughout the year statewide. Each one has a different artist demonstration or slide lecture and a different judge to lead the afternoon critique. Artists may enter as many Wisconsin Regional Art Workshops as they like.

Artists winning a State Exhibit Award are eligible to compete for monetary awards at the WRAA State Day in Madison. In order to enter the State Exhibit you must be a member of the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program.  You can join the organization at any time before the state exhibit by going to wraawrap.com and click on the tab to register.

In 2015 we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of WRAP>  The first Rural Art Exhibit was held at the Memorial Union during Farm and Home Week in 1940. Under the guidance of John Stuart Curry, the exhibit grew rapidly, expanding from 30 nonprofessional artists in 1940 to over 100 by 1947. The energy and enthusiasm of Curry's successor, Aaron Bohrod, the past WRAP directors, James Schwalbach, Ken Kuemmerlein,  and Leslee Nelson  and the help of the Wisconsin Rural Artists Association have continued to make the exhibition and workshops cornerstones of activity for nonprofessional artists throughout the state.

WRAP is developed and administered by the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Liberal Studies and the Arts. WRAP exhibits and workshops began in 1940 to encourage the creative growth of non-professional artists from rural areas.

They should do this annually to get credit and recognize artists who are hiding out there.
