The Chinese Fine Art Association is a Madison based nonprofit organization whose focus is to promote and raise awareness of the various Asian arts, particularly Chinese brush painting and Chinese calligraphy.

The members of the CFAA are regularly invited to bring their wonderful art to venues where they share lovely work like those on display at the Steenbock Gallery until November.  You can see their beautiful artwork weekdays during regular work hours.  (Look for 'The Gallery if Open" sign on the front steps and come in to view the exhibit.)

The relationship of the Chinese Fine Art Association and the Wisconsin Regional Art Program has been long and fruitful.  Members of CFAA have served on the board of the Wisconsin Regional Artist Association, WRAP's non-profit partner in bringing art opportunities to lay artists in Wisconsin.
Additionally individual members participate in some of the 20+ WRAP exhibits around the state, bringing the beauty of this traditional art form to the pleasure of viewing audiences.

The CFAA also annually sponsors and selects two awards. They have sponsored awards since 2003 and currently give two awards, one to a CFFA member and one to a non-member.

This exhibition features the paintings, scrolls and framed works, of eight members of the CFAA.  A virtual gallery of the memberships work can be found here.

Chinese Fine Art Association is an independent, nonprofit, educational organization established in 1999 here in Madison, WI. It is an organization open to general public. The primary focus of the organization is to promote and raise awareness of various oriental arts particularly the traditional form.

The goal is to bring the Eastern and Western art styles together, to create unique images of the subjects that artists observed and to introduce famous ancient techniques to interpret and create present images in their artworks. The objectives of the CFAA are to organize workshops for members and general public who are interested in exploring various forms of Chinese art, to exhibit their artworks in local community and to provide networking forum for sharing ideas and techniques among artists.

Currently, CFAA has 20 members reside at Greater Madison and Milwaukee areas. In the past few years, many exhibitions were held and received well at local galleries such as Museum of Wisconsin Art, UW Hospital Skylight Gallery, DeRecci, Memorial Union, Arboretum and former Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton’s Office.

About Chinese brush painting

Through thousands of years of development, ink painting derived its unique character from oriental art. It does not mimic or imitate nature, but is a process of observation, meditation and expression. The artist cultivates and contemplates with vitality and passion until the object and subject become inseparable and the images flow out of as a wholesome one.  It is the art of using strokes of a brush or lines to capture object or scenery. This technique was developed since 4000 B.C. Three painting styles are known in China throughout the dynasties. The elaborate style began in the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD). It uses fine lines, carefully drawn elements and multiple layers of color to create subtly shaded detailed paintings on rice paper and cicada paper with Chinese pigments. The spontaneous style uses free flowing application of pigment or ink on paper to attain the feel of the subject rather than showing lifelike details. The landscape style of the Song Dynasty (960-1279AD) combines elements of both above styles to show misty mountains, rocky cliff, pines, lakes and waterfalls.

“There are some paintings you can contemplate, some you can walk through, and some make you want to stay forever”, explained an elderly Chinese artist. The CFAA members hope you will find their paintings invite you to stay and enjoy them forever.

About International Federation of Asian Culture and Art (IFACA)

Many CFAA members are also members of IFACA which based in Japan with sponsoring organizations from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and U.S.  The purpose of the organization is to promote art educations, and to foster the sense of beauty by encouraging submission of ink brush paintings. The mission of the contest and
exhibition is to advance international cultural exchange which will help to build a better and more harmonious global community. The International Asian Sumi-E Brush Painting Contest, a juried contest, takes place annually at Japan and award winners’ artworks exhibit at Osaka Fine Art Museum, Japan, and galleries and museums in Taiwan and art centers and galleries in U.S.A. Detail information can be found at www.ifacasumi-e.org.  CFAA members have participated in annual International Sumi-e Contest in Japan since 2001 and won numerous prestigious awards. This is a juried contest and exhibitions are held at Osaka Museum and Taipei art gallery. Participants enter with paintings that are in long scroll format and/or framed paintings. The medium used is always Chinese pigments on silk or rice paper.

Plan to visit this lovely exhibition many times and then join us for the November 1 closing reception and meet some of the artists!

Meritorious works chosen from the regional shows are then eligible to exhibit and compete in the State Annual Conference, in September each year.

Entry forms should be mailed by July 22 to L'Atelier Studio, 509 Laurel Ave., Janesville, WI 53548. For information call Nancy McKinnon at (608) 752-0679 or Barbara Leonard at (608) 754-6630.
