Artist~Juror Ellen Roles workshop 'To Plan or Not to Plan'

The workshop will feature a digital presentation where Ellen will discuss compositional elements of two-dimensional art.  It is her belief that good art does not “just happen’ but is a result of choices - bases on technical practice and understanding of foundations of art.

Ellen Roles is motivated in her art making by vibrant color relationships such as placing red next to teal.  “The subjects I paint are mostly recognizable, but uniquely rendered with color and shape,” says Roles.  “I really enjoy making choices about composition and the process of putting paint on paper.”

It is her goal to create artwork that brings enjoyment—a work that will enhance, lift, entertain the viewer and decorate a space.  To that aim, I design with a focus on warm color and lightheartedness.”

Ellen is a teacher by design, and enjoys teaching both Math and art.  She  began teaching watercolor in Community Ed and regional art event plus 30 years ago.  She has taught at Dillman’s in Northern WI; North Star workshop at Roseville MN.  Having become well known for her technical competence and design skills, Roles also conducts a variety of workshops and classes both locally and regionally.

Mostly recently, her work has been included in the Gunderson Lutheran Hospital new Addition.  She was accepted as a signature member of the prestigious Transparent Watercolor Society of America and Wisconsin Watercolor Society.  Her work is included in the national exhibition at the Bloomington Art Center in Bloomington, MN.  She was invited to join in Waterborne Regional Art Instructors Exhibition at U of MINN.   Best of Show at ART on the Green.  First  recipient of the Sister Margaret Schlosser  Award from LCSAC.

Ellen has a BA in Math and in ART.  Also has studied with many nationally recognized instructors such as Ed Whitney, Frank Webb, Skip Lawrence and Myrna Wacknov to name a few.  You can see more of her art on her website:  http://ellenroles.blogspot.com

In 1946, a group of amateur Wisconsin artists formed the Rural Rembrandt Art Club to share art experiences with each other and with their community. For almost seventy years the Wisconsin art club has been providing an opportunity to enjoy art in all its various forms to the local community and has encouraged many aspiring artists by providing a forum for them to display and discuss their work and learn from other artists.  This WRAP exhibit is one of their long-term efforts to support enrichment through the arts.

Artists are asked to provide their own easels for display purposes.  Up to hree pieces of art may be displayed.    Artwork will be accepted from 8:30 to 9:30 am on June 7, 2014 at Marion Town Hall.

A lecture/demonstration will be held at 10 am until noon.   Artist Ann Singsaas of Stevens Point  will highlight the workshop  with a watercolor demonstration and hands on participation.  Ann is an accomplished artist teaching classes in drawing and painting throughout the Midwest.   With a micro-studio in Stevens Point, she exhibits in several states and is represented by several  Wisconsin galleries.

A pot-luck luncheon will be served to participating artists following the demonstration.

There are currently twenty-one communities that provide exhibition and workshop opportunities to state and local artists as a part of WRAP.  WRAP exhibitions offer non-professional artists from across the state of Wisconsin.

WRAP exhibitions offer non-professional lay artists from across the state of Wisconsin. WRAP defines 'non-professional' as those artists who do not make the majority of their income from their art.  Both beginners and highly accomplished artists are welcome to participate in these self-juried exhibitions.

Each exhibit and workshop is coordinated locally, most with the support of a local art organization.  You can find information about which WRAP exhibits are closest to you here.

Regional exhibits include a workshop on the final day for participating artists and the public in which a guest artist gives a lecture or demonstration followed by an educational critique of the exhibited artwork lead by the exhibit judge.  The artists who receive a State Award for their artworks are eligible to exhibit at the Annual State Art Exhibition and Conference held  August and September.  In 2014 the State Conference and Exhibition will be held at the Center for Visual Arts in Wausau.

In 2015 the State Conference and Exhibition will be back in Madison.

Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) exhibits/workshops began in 1940 to encourage the creative growth of Wisconsin non-professional artists from rural areas. WRAP is developed and administered by the UW-Madison, Division of Continuing Studies and has since expanded to include urban areas. WRAP exhibit/workshops are held throughout the year in over twenty locations around the Wisconsin.  WRAP and our non-profit partner, the Wisconsin Regional Artist Association,  are always interested in working with local community leaders, arts organization, and art venues to see if it is possible to bring WRAP to their communities.

Our partner, the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association (WRAA), is a non-profit organization, started in 1954 with just 36 members. WRAA’s mission then and now is to support Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP). In 2014 the WRAA's celebrates its 60th Anniversary promoting creative growth for Wisconsin's artists. Today with over 600 members, WRAA members continue to participate in and promote WRAP exhibits and the annual WRAP State Exhibit and Conference.

WRAA publications include Contour Notes, WRAP State Exhibit color catalog, WRAP Timely Treasures calendar, and brochures. In addition, WRAA also kicks off the WRAP State Exhibit and Conference weekend by hosting Evening with the Arts artists’ reception showcasing WRAP State Award art, WRAA sponsored Statewide Teen Art Mentor Program and WRAA Tiny Treasures Exhibit, Competition and Sale. WRAA also solicits and distributes over $4500 in awards given out at the annual award ceremony, which follows the annual WRAP State Exhibit Conference.

Consider joining the WRAA and participating in one of our local WRAP Exhibits and Workshops.  We would love to see you there and at our state day and exhibition in Wausau this summer.  Watch for more information as both draw nearer.
