Connecting community to campus for lifelong learning

WRAP 2017

With the new year well underway, we at WRAP thought it worthwhile to share ideas of what’s in store for 2017. Since WRAP works with a fiscal year that starts July 1st, this is a continuation of changes you have already seen. See our expanded outreach. Learn about our permanent collection. Meet our team; both Alli and Laura play a big role in the accomplishments and improvements you will read about below.

On a grassroots level, WRAP intends to encourage you to Create art, gives you a forum to Share your artwork and finally to a workshop to Connect to other lifelong learners.

Our Future

Why are things changing? Because we want WRAP to grow and improve how it serves community artists, and become a self sustaining enterprise. You can’t expect different results by doing the same thing.

The WRAP team is proud to be part of Continuing Studies and this world renowned institution of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. WRAP is a prime example of the
Wisconsin Idea in action. Continuing Studies leads the charge to prepare for these changes with Lifelong Learning 2020, a campus-wide strategic framework that calls on UW-Madison to:

•    Create transformative learning experiences
•    Reach more lifelong learners
•    Generate new revenue

What’s on deck?
Broadening our reach by:

Networking with statewide leaders. Liese has met with Anne Katz, Executive Director at Arts Wisconsin for 22 years. This is a nonprofit, statewide, community arts action and development organization (formerly known as the Wisconsin Assembly for Local Arts), whose mission is to nurture, serve, promote and speak up for the arts in Wisconsin and all of its communities. Because of the meeting, Liese now has the start of relationships for potential new WRAP locations catering to tribal arts, and has found connections between schools and areas for new exhibitions and ways to further the mission of bringing opportunities for Wisconsin artists to create, share and connect.

Creating ties with public libraries for outreach. We are aligning with 384 public libraries, and 82 public library branches in Wisconsin because they provide equitable access to information for all Wisconsin residents.

Connecting with all UW campuses. Did you know there are 26!

Developing new WRAP locations. We are working with Becky Herb, our fantastic WRAA/WRAP liaison, to reach more artists in more locations.

WRAP Permanent Collection

Did you know that the WRAP permanent collection is housed in the UW-Madison Continuing Studies building? We have 103 works of art dating back to 1940, which is when UW-Madison first began the Wisconsin Regional Art Program. Part of the director's job is to implement museum collection management tools in the care and keeping of these works. Five are these works of art will be in an upcoming publication.
Check out a few highlights from the collection below!

Fundraising

It is essential that we grow WRAP's endowment and build a fiscally sustainable program to ensure that WRAP will continue to inspire artists long into the future. Steps are underway to expand our financial base beyond relying on the $30 program fee. Please consider WRAP in your estate planning or year end tax deductible gifts. To donate to WRAP, click here. Planning State Day 2017

Save the date: exhibition is August 18 – September 23, conference is September 23, 2017. All are invited whether or not you are an award winner. This is an opportunity for artists from across Wisconsin to come together and celebrate each other.

This year we embrace the north tier of our state with Wausau as the location for our annual exhibition and conference. Complete details will be on our website by March 1.

Already under way:
The new online artist entry. This started with art submissions for the State day, which tested out with good success. Starting with the September Sun Prairie exhibition, we used this new system. We are modifying text almost weekly responding to your comments and suggestions.

Meet the UW-Madison WRAP Team

Liese Pfeifer believes art enhances all of our lives and she is a passionate lifelong learner about the preservation of our environment and cultural past. She received her MFA in sculpture from UW-Madison and is an artist, teacher, curator, mother, and works towards ecological sustainability. Pfeifer, who started work March 31, 2016 as Director of Wisconsin Regional Art Program, a part of Continuing Studies, works to ensure inclusive regional art opportunities across Wisconsin.
Her workload revolves around supporting WRAP regional coordinators and improving efficencies; answering questions, simplifying and digitizing paperwork, rewriting training materials and web presence. After contacting all 26 UW campuses, Pfeifer continues to encourage the career building experience for students along side the established repeat WRAP participants. Pfeifer organizes and plans the State Day Conference and serves as UW liaison to the board of directors of the Wisconsin Regional Arts association, the non-profit partner organization.
Picture
Laura Grotjan has been the student assistant with WRAP since August 2016. She received her BA in Fine Arts from UW-Platteville in 2014, and is presently working on an MA in Art History at UW-Madison. Someday she hopes to complete a PhD in Art History and pursue a career in the arts. In her free time, she also enjoys drawing and painting. She grew up near Neenah, WI on a 60-cow dairy farm, and as a native to the state, is proud to help support the arts in Wisconsin.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, she works with Liese and Alli in the Continuing Studies building. She assists with a variety of tasks, including: sending materials and information to coordinators and participants, updating social media, outreach (to UW schools and libraries in particular) in order to grow the program, data entry, responding to emails and inquiries, helping during special events and caring for the permanent collection.

Picture
Alli Timmins provides administrative support for WRAP and other Continuing Studies arts programs at UW-Madison. In the past she studied ceramics, sculpture, and art history at UW-Whitewater and Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. As an insatiable art lover and lifelong learner, she is happy to work with a program that encourages and connects artists throughout her home state.

She enjoys responding to WRAP inquiries, prospective participants, and regional coordinators. Her design background and strong computer skills enable her to create as-needed marketing materials and work alongside Liese and DCS marketing account managers to coordinate effective promotional materials. Her other WRAP duties include managing the WRAP database, recording artist and juror information, creating up-to-date mailing lists, processing payments, maintaining electronic records, and providing conference support and planning.

Alli stays informed on division and university resources beneficial to WRAP, and problem-solves to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of WRAP procedures in order to serve more Wisconsin artists, generate more revenue, and create meaningful learning experiences.

WRAA: a part of the team

WRAP has worked in collaboration with its nonprofit sister program, Wisconsin Regional Arts Association (WRAA), for over 60 years. WRAA cosponsors the State Exhibition and Conference in September. They host the Evening with the Arts gala, the Tiny Treasures exhibition, the Statewide Teen Art Mentor Program (STAMP), and fundraise for thousands of dollars in awards to Wisconsin artists. They also provide multiple publications to their membership throughout the year. Click here to find out more about becoming a WRAA member.
